The successful applicant will join our professional and friendly team of Orthopedic Practitioners, working closely alongside Orthopedic Physicians at Sidra Medicine. As a vital member of the casting services team, the Orthopedic Practitioner plays a key role in delivering safe, high-quality casting management to infants and young patients. You will be responsible for the expert application and removal of casts and splints, ensuring patient comfort while minimizing complications. Through strong collaboration with physicians and multidisciplinary staff, you will help provide exceptional, child-centered orthopedic care at a leading tertiary pediatric hospital in Qatar.
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Works autonomously to assess patients in a holistic manner in order to gauge the most appropriate cast, brace or splint option for their condition.
- Assists the orthopedic surgeon(s) and/or nursing/allied health staff to comprehensively manage and rehabilitate sick and disabled patients with fractured bones.
- Applies, modifies (bivalve, wedge, window etc.) and removes casts.
- Performs application, adjustment and removal of orthopedic devices.
- Assists in application, maintenance and adjustment of skin, skeletal and manual traction.
- Applies a variety of splints and bandages using various materials. Example; wrist splints, Velpeau bandages, humeral splints, ankle/ foot splints, elbow and knee braces, as ordered by the physician.
- Applies specialized casts such as hinged casts, shoulder spica, hip spica and body casts, total contact casting and ponsetti casting.
- Provides education to the patient and family on the proper care and use of casts and orthopedic appliances and advises on patient mobility assistance as required.
- Carries out wound care (wound assessment and wound care) and removes sutures, staples, K-wires, pins and external fixators using appropriate aseptic techniques. Ensures standard precautions for anticipated contact with blood and infectious materials.
- Works with the physician during procedures such as closed reduction of fractures and minor surgical procedures with or without anesthetic, using sterile technique.
- Works with the surgeons and nursing team to carry out diagnostic tests and clinical procedures as required.
- Interprets simple fractures and dislocations on X-ray film to ensure correct molding and position of casts and splints.
- Measures and fits patients for ambulatory aids (crutches). Instructs patients regarding proper use and care.
- Reinforces the teaching of medical information conveyed by the physician to the patient/family regarding the specific injury, treatment plan, procedures and expected outcomes.
- Teaches patient and family regarding wound care, cast care and skin care based on knowledge of potential problem and follow up assessment of the patient/ family learning needs.
- Maintenance of orthopedic equipment and supplies.
- Communicates with the other Allied Health Professionals in a collaborative manner.
- Responds to telephone enquiries from patients by providing information or referring the problem to the appropriate member of the health care team.
- Documents accurately all relevant and pertinent clinical information in the patient chart, schedules patient appointments and performs clerical duties as required.
- Prepares, cleans, maintains equipment and instruments and disposes of contaminated items.
- Ensures workspaces are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion before, during and after patient care.
- Maintains an inventory of orthopedic supplies and equipment and ensures that casting and other relevant instruments/ consumables are always available.
- Appropriately reports equipment failure to line manager promptly.
- Facilitates teamwork, and treats colleagues, patients/ families and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
- Contributes actively in continuing education, attending educational activities and committees as requested.
- Works towards the achievement of agreed key performance indicators for self and unit by completing required information to inform these KPI’s.
- Provides documented evidence of own performance and maintenance of skills consistent with the position. This includes a MoPH Continuing Professional Development Profile for licensure.
- Responsible for maintaining up to date mandatory Life Support Training requirements as directed by MoPH and Sidra (e.g. BLS, AED etc).
- Maintains strict patient confidentiality.
- Participates in the instruction and demonstration of casting techniques to students and other healthcare professionals such as medical students, interns and residents.
- Performs on call duties and shift assignments as required by the orthopedic services.
- Follows all organizational policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS – REQUIREMENTS ESSENTIAL Education Qualification in Orthopedic Casting from a recognized association and affiliation Experience5+ years of relevant experience which must include pediatric caseload inclusive of:
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in care, application, and safe removal of cast’s specialized to pediatric orthopedics (e.g. hip spica, Ponseti casts, etc.) and Emergency trauma.
- Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in application of specialized braces including Pavlik Harness, Hip Abduction braces, Clubfoot Foot Abduction Orthosis (FAO), etc.
- Demonstrated experience of wound care.
- Interpretation of X-rays.
- Experience working with disabled or injured populations.
- Experience in training individuals in the use of gait aids (crutches).
- Licensed and/or certified by an accredited licensure body in home country
- Eligible for licensure in the State of Qatar
- Patient assessment skills.
- Excellent knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, orthopedic conditions, wound healing, fracture healing and complications.
- Demonstrated ability to apply and integrate knowledge and skills into practice.
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in care, application, and safe removal of casts specialized to pediatric orthopedics (e.g. hip spica, Ponseti casts, etc.) and Emergency trauma.
- Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in application of specialized braces including Pavlik Harness, Hip Abduction braces, Clubfoot Foot Abduction Orthosis (FAO), etc.
- Demonstrated experience of wound care.
