The Technologist I – Special Chemistry plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality analytical services within the Special Chemistry laboratory. The incumbent assists in the validation and verification of specialized instrumentation and methodologies (e.g., LC-MS/MS, HPLC, ICP-MS), ensures compliance with CAP, ISO 15189, and JCI standards, and contributes to the preparation of laboratory policies and procedures. This role also involves the training of laboratory staff in advanced analytical techniques, and participation in the department’s continuing professional development and research initiatives.
Working under minimal supervision, the Technologist I – Special Chemistry performs a wide range of highly technical assays and procedures that require expert knowledge and judgment. The incumbent ensures adherence to health, safety, and quality standards and acts as a subject matter expert in specialized biochemical assays including trace elements, vitamins, Amino Acids, and metabolic markers.
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Performs and monitors highly specialized assays including: Quantification of amino acids, immunosuppressants, vitamins (A, E), and trace elements (e.g., copper, zinc, selenium).
- Support for newborn screening and rare metabolic disorder testing.
- Operates and maintains advanced instrumentation such as LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, ICP-MS, HPLC, AAS, and chemiluminescent immunoassay analyzers.
- Troubleshoots complex analytical platforms (e.g., LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, HPLC) by identifying hardware, software, and assay-related issues, ensuring minimal downtime and accurate result delivery.
- Demonstrates strong post-analytical review skills, including critical evaluation of chromatographic and spectral data such as peak shape, retention time, signal-to-noise ratio, integration accuracy, internal standard performance, and ion ratio consistency for mass spectrometry-based assays
- Assists in method development, validation, and implementation of new tests in line with laboratory needs and international standards.
- Applies expert judgment to evaluate specimen integrity, analytical validity, and clinical relevance of results, and escalates complex cases to senior staff as needed.
- Participates actively in internal and external quality control (IQC/EQC) programs and takes corrective action when control results fall outside acceptable limits.
- Reviews and updates SOPs in accordance with CAP, ISO15189, and JCI requirements.
- Provides specialized training and mentorship to technologists and trainees on advanced analytical techniques and theory.
- Collaborates with the Technologist II and Supervisor - Chemistry to manage reagent and consumable inventory, ensuring uninterrupted testing.
- Liaises with clinical teams to provide technical support on test interpretation, appropriate test selection, and critical result communication.
- Supports laboratory accreditation and audit readiness activities through meticulous documentation, audit trail maintenance, and procedural compliance.
- Participates in interdisciplinary research and developmental projects as assigned, supporting evidence-based innovation in clinical testing.
- Uses LIS and middleware systems to manage, review, and release patient results, ensuring timeliness and accuracy in line with established turnaround times (TATs).
- Complies with infection control policies and safety protocols specific to handling of high-risk materials and reagents in Special Chemistry.
- Upholds the values, policies, and ethical standards of Sidra Medicine, including patient confidentiality, data security, and professional conduct.

- Strong knowledge and experience in most of all of the aforementioned analytical techniques (LC-MS/MS, LC-MS, UPLC, ICP-MS, HPLC) as applied to clinical laboratory analysis
- Meets the requirement for licensure by Qatar Supreme Council of Health which includes a prometric exam
- Licensed and/or certified by an accredited licensure body in the home country
- Competent in a broad range of specialized analytical techniques including LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, HPLC, and advanced immunoassays, applied in the Special Chemistry laboratory.
- Highly skilled in troubleshooting complex analytical platforms, including the identification and resolution of instrument malfunctions, software errors, signal irregularities, ion suppression, peak shape anomalies, and calibration failures.
- Competent in several sections such as Chemistry, and Urinalysis.
- Strong understanding of international laboratory accreditation standards, with practical application of ISO 15189, CAP, CPA, and JCI guidelines within a high-throughput Special Chemistry setting.
- Capable of working collaboratively within a team, while also demonstrating the ability to function independently with minimal supervision.
- Participates in 24/7 laboratory operations, including weekends and holidays, as required.
